THE EQUAL COMMUNITY INITIATIVE

Funded by the European Social Fund (ESF), the EQUAL Community Initiative tests new ways of tackling discrimination and inequality experienced by those in work and those looking for a job.

The key principals of EQUAL are: transnational co-operation, innovation, empowerment, thematic and partnership approach, dissemination and mainstreaming to ensure that EQUAL informs policies and practice. The activities are structured on the four pillars of the European Employability: Entrepreneurship, Adaptability, Equal opportunities for women and men, and the needs of asylum seekers.
EQUAL forms part of the European Union strategy to create more and better jobs and to make sure that no-one is denied access to these jobs.

THE S.UP.PORT. PROJECT

The SUPPORT project – Skills Upgrading in the Ports, is the only Italian project in the shipbuilding sector that has been financed by the European Social Fund within the framework of the EQUAL Community Initiative.

The project is the result of specific requirements in the port sector, and aims to provide solutions to prevent the risk of job loss, particularly in the shipbuilding sector.
In fact, the promoters, Livorno Port Authority as project leader, Naples Port Authority and Genoa’s Finporto company, during the summer of 2001, when the shipbuilding crisis was growing, developed this project on the basis of two motivations:

  1. the realization that the crisis was affecting the European shipbuilding sector in general, including Italy;
  2. the knowledge that the consequences of such a crisis will have a heavy impact in a productive environment like the Italian shipbuilders market, mainly composed of small and medium-sized shipyards, in terms not only of job losses, but also of a strong necessity for retraining the work force.

For these reasons, our project is addressed to Human Resources in shipbuilding companies, and also to port companies, terminals and dock labour.
